Course Description

Difficult people are everywhere. Their numbers are small, but their impact is costly to organizations. They exhibit habitual behavior that negatively affects most people. Attendees will learn how to identify the various types of difficult people and ways to manage situations.

This presentation uses the DISC assessment to demonstrate the range of day-to-day workplace communication and behaviors. Some people confuse people who have a different workplace communication style than they do as "difficult." This presentation clarifies the difference between regular communication versus a "difficult" person's style.

When most people encounter a difficult person, they do not understand their reactions and are unsure how to react. Difficult people are unpredictable; their behavior can range from disruptive and loud to quiet and withdrawn. Difficult people are in every organization. Their impact on workplace productivity and teamwork is negative. Difficult people use their form of communication and behavior to control and undermine projects. Teams with difficult members experience high turnover rates and low morale and productivity. Members spend time talking about the problematic person, negatively impacting customer satisfaction and revenue.

The presentation gives you action steps and processes that work. There are various ways to handle the different types of difficult people. Identification of difficult people enables people to take charge of the situation rather than allowing the difficult person to take control.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall the DISC framework

  • List DISC behavior and communication styles

  • Identify the DISC stress behaviors

  • Identify the common mistakes people make

  • List workplace examples of difficult people

  • Determine ways to manage really "difficult" people
